Left Out in the Cold

The last two years have been, without a doubt, the longest period of time our RV has not seen regular use. We did manage to take an extended two-week trip last summer to the Yukon to attend a family wedding, but other than that, “Hopper” has sat mostly idle. As we find ourselves caught in the tight grip of one of the coldest temperature snaps in many years in the Pacific Northwest, it is important to reflect on the importance of ensuring our rigs are happily weathering out the sub-zero temperatures, as well as the snow.

Washington is well known for its many historic and scenic State Parks across the state offering day use areas and campgrounds. What many don’t know is that they also oversee the states Sno-Parks and offer activities like First Day Hikes and Adventure Labs.

As I detailed in an earlier article, I was a reluctant RV Guy. As an outdoor educator who probably spent close to two months each year sleeping in a tent, I thought of myself as a Tent Guy. My wife, Shari, also loved tent adventures, but her life-altering plan of giving up our university jobs, house, and all of our stuff to travel the continent involved a bit more than just our favorite lightweight sleeping shelter. Her bid on the vintage camper (which would become our full-time home) was a leap of faith that I might come around.

Are you one of the many readers of NorthwestRVing.com that lives in Western Washington? Have you had enough of the wet soggy weather and long dark nights this time of year? Then load up the RV and head to Sequim, where there is a little less rain and the nights shine a little brighter through the first week of January.
Since Sequim lies in the rain shadow of the lofty Olympic Mountains, the town and surrounding area receives less than half the annual rainfall of Seattle aka “Rain City”. Less rain equates to drier weather and more opportunities for active RVers to enjoy the outdoors.
